An intensive 3 month course combining group workshops with individual tutorials and projects.

Finding Your Style

Three intensive months at Hatlestrand, Norway
Maximum 6 students

Teacher: Ian Ward Garlant ianwardgarlant.com

- A course for people who wish to develop and demonstrate their individual style and construct a visual portfolio.  A portfolio is required for further education on university level. It is also very useful for job applications and for presenting your creative skills.

- A course for craftsmen wanting to learn how to draw better, or wanting to develop their skills in the direction of art and design

- A course for young adults who feel outside the system and who need to work on who they are and what they want.

At THE FOCUS COURSE you learn how to ‘see’ more clearly.
The best way is through drawing exercises. We use drawing to observe, explore and experiment. Drawing exercises will be combined with writing, photo, printing, collage and work in 3D.

THE FOCUS COURSE is designed for a wide range of creative interests,
aims and ambitions.

THE FOCUS COURSE enables different kinds of students to work in co-operation. By working together they learn from each other, and so develop their personal creativity.  This process will be followed closely  by the teacher, especially in the drawing exercises.

Work will be discussed, examined and built on.  Tutorials, both one on one and in groups, will widen perspective and build confidence.
Students will learn how to be original. You will build up a body of work (a portfolio) both digital and physical, that will present you, your style, your skills and interests the best way.

NOK a month. Sudents will have their own bedroom, and will be sharing bathroom, kitchen and living room. Bed linen is included.

The aim of THE FOCUS COURSE is to help you become more self-assured,
more self-aware, and more focused in your creativity.

The course is split into four main areas:

Students will learn a variety of techniques, materials and processes, and will achieve a working understanding of each . This will enable students to continue their own personal projects.

3d

Work in 3 D - sculptural exercises and model making

Part of the Focus course uses drawing to record, explore, and experiment. This is combined with collage, printing and photography. Students will learn a variety of techniques, materials and processes, and will achieve a working understanding of each . This will enable students to continue their own personal projects.

research

Concept and research - planning, illustrating, editing

There will be guided research projects for both group and private work. The ability to develop and present a visual concept clearly and effectively is vital to all creative disciplines. The students will learn how to present new ideas and build a personal archive.

presentation

Presentation - portfolio construction and identifying the next step forward

Students will practice presenting their work and ideas in both group and individual situations. This part of the process is an important part of the whole working process. Much of the last month of the course will be devoted to editing, and organising the students work into a ‘ portfolio’ of whatever size , format or media is most suitable.

TIME TABLE

There will be individual and group tuition Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday,
between 0915 and 1645. Wednesday will be for personal studies.
